Will the japanese make the humpback whales go extinct? The japanese just announced plans to harpoon and kill 5,000 humpback whales next year. Why do they want to make the humpback whales go extinct? Will the gene pool get so small that all humbacks die off even in areas like new england where the japanese cant get in there to kill them? Wont this kill off the whale- watching industry?

  2. martinthurn says:

LOL there is no whale-watching industry in Japan whey they do the hunting. There is no gene-pool mixing from the Western Pacific to the Western Atlantic. During the 300 million years whales have been on the planet, do you know how many swam from Japan to Boston? Zero point zero. Japanese people don’t want to make them extinct, they just want to EAT THEM because they are DELICIOUS!!! In 3 billion years the whales will be extinct no matter how hard we try to save them. So what’s the big deal?

  3. Melissa E says:

Whale watching is popular around here, but this being a global issue, are you sure Boston is where you wanted to ask this? IMHO, their plans need to be canceled or annulled…

why do humpback whales have white pectoral fins? or as my 4-year old put it “why are its flippers white adn it’s body blue?”

  5. Penfold says:

Chevy you are wrong, tell me one predator that the humpback whale has? anyways back to the question….. there are less skin tone cells in the pectoral fins, the pectoral fins have to be so strong to power all the weight of the humpback, what it has done to adapt, is taken all the things that it doesnt need (AKA the skin tone cells) to make it stronger, and it can put more muscle in the fin to power the hump back whale

  6. The bottoms are white and the top is blue. This is a form of evolved camouflage. Blue on top makes it hard to see from above and white on the bottom makes it difficult to see from below. You’ll see similar coloration on several marine mammals and some fish.

  10. joelly173 says:

There are at least 70,000 humpback whales worldwide. I’ve seen a lot of these in my native country.

  11. different vocal sounds for humpback whales? When a male humpback whale sings, how can you tell whether the whale is singing to attract females for mating or to tell other whales to clear away from his territory? by the way, I’d like professional answers please.

  12. mating calls sound have more base in the sounds

  13. Sweet Pea says:

I think the call does both. While the call warns males it also alerts any females in the general area that he is ready to mate. I love humpback whales, they are my favorite whale.

  14. Q: How is a walrus like tupperware? A: They both like a tight seal!

  15. RioJade says:

The Humpback whales are really shameless, waving their tails seductively at all the tourists with their super-powered binoculars. Just shoot a few harpoon in the vicinity, and the fat floosies will take the hint and dive. I can smell a Seaslut a mile away.

  16. Originally named Dryhump Back Whales, it was quickly recognized that the name made no sense since whales frequently dwell in wet environments, so the name was changed to Humpback Whales. As the name implies, they will hump anything. Seasluts are a copycat specie, since they will also hump anything that doesn’t float. The Goth Seasluts will also hump anything, even if it is floating belly up. Hope this helps. Marine biology can be so confusing to the layperson.
